International female researchers face additional challenges due to their status as foreigners and women. On the one hand, international scholars often find it difficult to manage conflicts in the workplace since they may be unfamiliar with social norms and formal regulations in Germany. On the other hand, they may encounter gendered role expectations and struggle to build networks. In addition, international female researchers find it more difficult to balance their work and family life compared to German researchers given the absence of close kin in Germany, although informal childcare support would be necessary to complement the insufficient childcare system in Germany. The presenter argues that a strong network among international female scholars could be key to alleviating the above-mentioned challenges. The session includes a short overview of literature on the difficulties faced by international female scholars and biographical notes from the presenter, who worked as an international female researcher in the German academia for eight years. Most importantly, the session aims to encourage participants to exchange their experiences in Germany and form a network.

The Talk is part of the Study Work Life Week 2023 of the University of Bremen.
