Projects

Throughout my studies, I built up considerable knowledge of historical and geopolitical mechanisms in Africa but not only through Academia thanks also to my background and roots. I am keen on discovering, learning and keeping myself busy with West African matters predominantly Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal.

As a member of a five researchers’ team involved on the "Transnational Welfare: The rise, decay and renaissance of social policy in Africa" project, which is the project B09 of the CRC 1342: Global Development Dynamics in Social Policy.

As a researcher, I am currently focusing on the global dynamics of social policy. More specifically, I am looking at social policy related to food security and nutrition in Senegal. In identifying mechanisms for the emergence, regression, and reconstruction of social policies in Senegal.
It is also about understanding and if possible, measuring the influence of other forms of organization such as the role of churches, Muslim brotherhoods and peasant groups in shaping social policies. The purpose of this comparative study is to identify the similarities, but also to understand what are the structural differences from one country to another. As a member of a research group comparing Egypt, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia.

The foregoing does not intend to completely and rigidly reflect the approaches and questions that are guiding my research and thesis. This represents an overview of what I will most likely be dealing with.
This is a three and a half year research that started in May 2018 and should end in December 2021.

To do so, I am asking in one of my paper, what, beyond monetary interests, binds social policy actors in Senegal? In addition to that, I am establishing the trajectory of food and nutrition-related policies in Senegal. As well as sketching health and education trajectories.

The dissertation’s contribution includes a historical perspective of how colonial policies transcended into the post-independence period. It will furthermore contribute to the present social policy knowledge production as it relates to food security and nutrition in Senegal. Based on a qualitative approach and the use of historical-empirical case analysis to identify continuities, interruptions, and similarities of social policies related to food security. Empirical work through research stays in Senegal are resulting in data collection through interviews with national and international actors as well as members of civil society. The bibliographical and documentary review to lay a framework for the research and on the ground consultation of archives.
